Late fall is when a spare room starts earning its keep. A home office may need to welcome holiday guests, or a condo den may need to become a bedroom without giving up its everyday function. A Murphy bed can solve that problem beautifully, but only when the exact model fits the room, the delivery route and the structure it must attach to.
Before you order, work through these seven checks. They will help you avoid a bed that fits on paper but cannot be delivered, opened or installed as intended.
1. Start with the exact product, not a general bed size
“Queen Murphy bed” is not a complete specification. Cabinet height, overall width, open-bed projection, mattress limits and mounting details vary by brand and model. Download the current installation manual and keep the product link. If the retailer lists several sizes or configurations, confirm the exact one in your cart.
A useful reminder comes from Bestar’s 61-inch full Murphy bed listing. That specific model calls for a minimum ceiling height of 85.7 inches, extends 87.8 inches from the wall when open, and recommends 30 to 36 inches of clearance around the open bed. Other models have different dimensions. Measure from your own model’s document, not from those numbers.
2. Measure the bed in three positions
The closed cabinet footprint is only the first measurement. Map the room with the bed closed, fully open and during assembly.
Closed: Check cabinet width, height and depth, including handles, trim and side storage.
Open: Mark the full projection on the floor with painter’s tape. Make sure the lowered bed does not block the room door, closet, balcony door, radiator or main walking path.
Assembly: Leave clear floor area for panels, hardware and safe movement. A bed that fits after installation can still be difficult to build in a crowded room.
Measure at more than one point. Condo walls and floors are not always perfectly square, and baseboards or bulkheads can reduce usable space.
3. Check the installation surface before delivery day
A Murphy bed is not freestanding bedroom furniture. Its safety depends on the manufacturer’s specified connection to suitable structure. Some models attach to the wall, while others use both wall and floor connections. Bestar’s installation manual, for example, tells installers to follow the anchoring requirements for the actual wall type and notes that the supplied wall screws are for wood-frame walls.
Before booking, share what you know about the wall and floor. Note concrete, drywall over studs, masonry, prominent baseboards, floor vents and anything hidden or sensitive that building management has identified. If you are unsure, say so. The installer can assess access and suitability, but building approval, structural changes and work involving electrical, gas or plumbing remain outside a furniture-assembly appointment.
4. Walk the entire delivery route
Large flat-pack cartons can fail the route long before they reach the room. Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway turn and elevator opening. Look for low light fixtures, tight corners and door closers. Confirm whether the building requires an elevator reservation, service entrance, protective padding or a certificate of insurance.
Do not discard or separate the hardware boxes when the delivery arrives. Keep every carton dry, indoors and near the installation room if the building permits it. If you notice crushed corners, torn packaging or missing labels, photograph them before assembly begins.
5. Confirm the mattress and the room plan
Use the mattress requirements for the exact mechanism. Thickness, dimensions and weight limits can affect how a wall bed closes and balances. Do not assume an existing mattress will work because the nominal size matches.
Plan the open room as carefully as the closed one. A desk chair, coffee table or rolling cabinet may need a practical parking spot when the bed comes down. Check that guests can reach a light switch and move around the bed without climbing over furniture. For a multi-use room, the best plan is the one you can reset without moving half the room.
6. Prepare the room for installation
Clear the installation wall and enough nearby floor area to sort long panels. Move artwork, lamps and fragile items out of the work zone. Keep pets away from open hardware and moving components. If your condo has limited loading or elevator time, include that window when you request the quote.
Assembly should follow the current manufacturer instructions. The lifting mechanism, cabinet alignment and final operating check are parts of one system, not separate shortcuts.
7. Send a complete quote package
A clear request makes it easier to confirm the right crew, tools and scope. Include:
the exact product link and model number
a photo of the intended wall and surrounding floor
room width, ceiling height and open-bed clearance
the wall and floor type, if known
parking, stairs, elevator and loading details
the delivery status and preferred installation date
If side cabinets, shelves or lighting are part of the package, list them separately. 6IX Assembly can assemble and install supplied Murphy-bed components according to the product requirements, but does not perform electrical work, custom built-ins or structural alterations.
